Backlight 6 installation errors

After some configuration changes to the shared host my Backlight 4 stopped working, so I decided to update to Backlight 6. The TTG website did not offer any update price, so I paid for a new licence and downloaded the installation package.

Following the instructions at Installation & Setup | Backlight I unzipped the package and uploaded all the directories and files to a new directory on the server (that is, not the same directory as the Backlight 4 files).

I tried to run the installer by browsing to //backlight/installer/ as instructed, but the browser returned this message:

“Forbidden
You don’t have permission to access this resource.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.”

I tried again with //backlight/installer/index.php which did display a Backlight Installer page, but it asked for “details of your most recent SendOwl Backlight order to proceed with installation” (although the payment was made through Gumroad) with a single form field asking for “Email used for Order”. I tried entering my email address and clicking the “Log into Installer” button, the following message was returned:

“Not Found
The requested URL was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.”

I’m disappointed and stymied. I would appreciate some help to get this working.

if you go to Backlight modules in your BL4 installation, are there any notices of updates being available?

you should be able to update from your current BL 4 installation. That is also where any available discount is shown

Thanks for the suggestion rod_barbee, I appreciate your help.

Unfortunately my BL4 installation is no longer available – browsing to that URL returns a bunch of errors, starting with “Creation of dynamic property AdminController::$dbHandler is deprecated”, probably a result of changes to the web server configuration.

Cheers
Peter

Peter, if you can, lower the PHP version to the lowest one available on your admin panel of your host. With a older PHP version, you might be able to run the update from your Backlight admin page.

Thank you Daniel!

I tried various older PHP versions until I found one that worked. I was able to update from Backlight 4 to Backlight 6, and my galleries are working again.

Thanks again
Peter
