Admin panel issue

Somehow (I’m still trying to figure this out) GoDaddy sent me an email to look at some new AI website developer. I looked at it, didn’t click on anything, and then I left. A couple of days later, there was a home page announcing that my site was “coming soon.” I called GoDaddy, and apparently somehow their new website builder took over my site. The Tech rep as very helpful, got rid of all the “new” stuff, and then had to reset my DNS back to my IP address.

A few days later, I attempted to log into the admin panel, and both Safari and Chrome could not connect to my server. Again, I’m back on the phone with GoDaddy. The Tech support guy said that my htaccess was the problem, and there was some “code” that was added, and I need to fix it. I know nothing about code. I downloaded a copy of the file which he renamed "htaccess_old) and I can now access the panel. However today, I noticed I have no access to any of the contacts (mostly spam) on the site.

I have a copy of the htaccess_old, but I don’t know if that is something that I can attach for you to look at, or if that file should be in the public domain. Is this something I can attach, or should I email it to you for you to look at?

Thanks in advance.

@Ben may need to look into it, but there is something you can try.

There are two .htaccess files in a Backlight installation, one in the root of the site and one in the backlight/ folder.

You can try replacing these with the originals from your Backkight Installer download (from your original purchase download).

In the unzipped Backlight Installer folder you’ll see two files and two folders:

index.php
.htaccess
backlight/
galleries/

inside the backlight/ folder is another (different) .htaccess file.

Try uploading the two .htaccess files from the unzipped installer folder to their corresponding locations on the server.

Thanks for the reply… The only copy of the installer I have on my computer is when I started with Backlight 2. If I remember correctly, when I went from Backlight 4 to 5, I believe that was done via your automation via the admin panel.

Try this then: In Backlight, go to Admin > Special Links
On the Special Links page, click on Update Backlight Index Files. This will update the index.php and .htaccess files inside of the backlight/ folder.

Thanks, I’ll give it a try this evening when I get home.

I appreciate ya!

Kurt

Thanks.I’m able to get in.

My Follow-up: My site seems to be working fine, however, I discovered that my contact page cannot be accessed. I did do the “test email” and it was successful.

I get this message via Safari when I attempt to reach the page: Not Found

The requested URL was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Any ideas?

can you post a link to your site?

Is it possible to attach the htaccess file that GoDaddy said was the initial issue? Or can I email it to you?

I see my “About” page does the same thing. The “Search page” works.

Kurt

in your About page settings, what is the Identifier?

I suppose you could copy and paste the .htaccess file here. If you do, after pasting, select all the code and then click on the code icon in the toolbar at the top of the message window so the code will appear as code

Or wait for @Ben, he might want you to send it. Don’t send it to me, I don’t know enough about .htaccess to be of any help.

That is exactly what is there, and the same is for the Contact page.I guess I’ll wait to see if Ben wants it.

Thanks for all your help Rod. I’m fairly confident that the GoDaddy web builder did some modifications to the file that shouldn’t be there.

I’d copy the .htaccess file from the Backlight installer zip file to the root of your website as per installation instructions:

I’ve looked and found the file, however, it is from 2018, probably when I was on Backlight 2. I don’t know if the file has changed since then. I don’t have an Installer for Backlight 5, as it was auto updated when I purchased the update. Any tips on finding the Backlight 5 Installer?

Look at the order confirmation for Backlight 5. It includes a download link from which you can grab the .htaccess file.

Thanks, but for some reason, I have every confirmation for every version except Backlight 5. Ugh!!!

You can try using the .htaccess files from BL 4. From what I can tell, they are the same as BL5
(the latest BL 5 installer I have is the -120)

I’ll give it a try!

I gave it a try with no success.

Thanks everyone…maybe Ben will chime in soon.

I called GoDaddy tech support to see if there was an issue there. They looked at the old htaccess file, and there is programming within it ,and apparently the new htaccess file is empty when moved from the installer. I don’t know what to do at this point.
