I’ve received the email regarding the release of Backlight 5, so I’m assuming that the development of BK4 will stop shortly?
So will Backlight 5 have:
A more useable\workable image download function, BK4 touched on this but never really had a workable function IMO not being able to download images in the “photos to download” folder seemed as if it missed the mark somewhat.
Essays is a great user friendly function to BK4, it would be nice to be able to have this functionality across all page designs and without having to prefix the pages with “essay” or what ever we decided to call it?
Being able to customize the location “photo-to-download” as we used to be able to pre Backlight. From a house keeping point of view having to go into hundreds of individual folders to delete the “the high res versions” is a pain in the arse, One location called “downloads” and then “Album name” would make life Soooo much easier.
This is only my opinion and workflow, it’s great to see new versions coming out but fine tuning what we already have would be a better user experience.
BL4 (not BK4) development has ceased. There will be no further updates other than for critical issues.
We have various ways of downloading photos. Can you upload a screenshot showing which link or button you’re referring to?
Why do you need to prefix with essay?
How did you upload “the high res versions” that are a pain to delete? Can you elaborate on the structure you have, the TTG product that you were using when you set up that structure, and what you’re actually trying to achieve?

The majority of photoshoots I do the client receives the high res files via a Client response gallery, so what I end up with over the course of the year is hundreds of galleries with high res folders “photos-for-download” within each individual gallery, so when freeing up server space etc I have to use FTP to go into each gallery and delete the “photos-for-download” which takes ages!!!

As such, the download function is treated as ‘download of photos’ and not ‘download of photos-for-download’, which can be much larger. I’ll look to add an option to use photos-for-download renditions when available. Once there, I would advise that you test out different memory options in the CR settings against the number of files you allow to be downloaded, to ensure that it works within the memory limits on your server.
This change will most likely be in our next feature release, for which we don’t yet have an expected date."
I have asked this question before and Rod advised I keep a spreadsheet for folders to be deleted so I’d assumed there wasn’t an easy way to deal with this?
The implementation of photos-for-download fell through the cracks. I will look into this. I noticed that what you quoted was not in a conversation with you.
CR is intended for feedback and not for the delivery of high-res files. Can you not just delete the albums when they are no longer current?
By “prefix,” you mean “include the path?”
You can create a permalink for the album (to create a simpler url to send your clients) but the url will resolve to the actual path.
To create a simpler permalink, edit the album and go to the Features tab and enable Permalink.

There is an option for “Create custom download rendition via publisher” so the option is there?
I do not want to delete the entire gallery as when clients look at Portraits_2022 - TSIPhotography I do not want them to see only a handful of galleries, I.E so it looks like i’ve done a handful of shoots in 2022 etc.
I will admit I’m a bit clueless with the technicalities here, but what prevents us\you from having an option to say “max 10 downloads” a client selects the downloads " heart shape" clicks “Download” and he\she downloads their selections, not in zip format. A high percentage of my client s download on a mobile device and have no clue what to do with a zip file?
That is the feature that has often been requested, and the most practical way to implement bulk downloads. If it doesn’t suit your purpose then don’t enable it. We try to provide features that are broadly useful. Backlight is not bespoke software.
@mridley, what had actually fallen between the cracks was updating the topic that you quoted from.
The ability to choose the rendition type for downloads has been in Client Response since version 10.1.0, released on 28/9/2021. This is in the Client Response settings:
