Cart & Sales Tax

With the popularity of online shopping, many states have realized that they are missing out on sales tax and have started requiring them on Shipping!

From The Houston Chronicle, in part:

When Shipping Taxes Apply
The majority of states (Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin) require that sales tax be calculated on the cost of the merchandise plus the cost of shipping. In other words, your bill to customers in these states should be itemized, and sales tax should be calculated from the total.

So, in North Carolina, for example, in state, we charge sales tax on both our book AND shipping of same, while out of state, we only charge sales tax on shipping.

Has anyone figured out an easy way to do this? It would be terrific if Matt could implement a “Tax on item” and a separate “Tax on shipping” to meet the needs of so many of us.

That way, I could make my shopping cart items different for the two cases.

Thanks, I hope, and …

Is it a requirement by your state that you collect sales tax on only the shipping for items going out of state?
But if it’s a requirement of other states that you do this, check more carefully with their requirements. There is likely a sale threshold that you have to meet before being required to collect tax for other states.

Yes, it is a requirement in NC that we collect sales tax on just the shipping costs for out-of-state sales. In state, it requires sales tax for both the book and the shipping! UGH!

And the link to the Houston Chronical, notes other states that require that, too.
