Markdown Windows application needed

I downloaded and installed MarkdownPad, but for some reason it won’t run on my Windows 11 PC. It crashes when I open it. Can someone recommend a free Markdown editor that works similarly to MarkdownPad–type in one window, HTML creaeted in the other window? I see lots of choices, but experience here counts for a lot.

Thanks!

I don’t use Markdown pad but I thought I’d give it a try with my Windows 11 laptop. (I downloaded Markdown Pad 2)

I got the crash message but there was also some troubleshooting info stating that the Awesomium 1.6.6 SDK might fix it, which it did.

I too used Markdown pad but found I also had to install Awesomium to get it to work, then about a year ago Matt mentioned a product called Obsidian, https://obsidian.md/

I use both a notebook when I travel, most of the time I am on the road, and an Alienware desktop for image and website management. By placing my .md files on Microsoft OneDrive, I find I always have access to my documents and don’t need to pay the cloud fees offered by the company. In summary, the free version works just fine.

Rod and Jim,

Thank you for your replies.

MarkdownPad is recommended in the BL docs – Writing Copy in Backlight | Backlight – and I used it very successfully when I first designed my website several years ago. Back then, my computers were running Windows 10. My new PCs run Windows 11 and that’s when I ran into that error message. I’m pleased to hear that Awesomium will allow MD to run on Win11. Thanks, Rod.

I found two online markdown editors that output to HTML for cut and paste into a web page. For simple documents, they seem to work well. Neither is as simple and straightforward as MarkdownPad, but they are free and don’t require downloading and installing an application.

I recommend Obsidian, available for free, for all platforms.

And I’m updating the docs with this suggestion.
