I am trying out the Pangolin Journal but the album in the set does not show up. I obviously went wrong somewhere but I am stuck now.
I created a sandbox top-level for it, maybe something went wrong there.

Does the album appear in Backlight Publisher inside the set? Can you visit that album?

Do you have at least one block in the Journal template enabled?
Yes block 1 containing only 1 (test)album.
There are errors in the console. Looks like the API script isn’t loading.
You’ve installed Backlight in some location other than https://www.fotograafdonald.nl/backlight?
Matt, does the JSON API need to be enabled for Journal? I don’t recall off the top of my head.
Assuming the internal authentication is working, it should not be necessary to enable the JSON API in settings.
@Ben has a fix in for the upcoming 4.0.2 release, “Fixes issue with paths on JSON API and Pangolin Journal when site resides in a subdirectory”. I’m wondering if that might address what’s happening here, as it seems Donald has Backlight installed someplace other than our recommended location.

I’m not sure if this topic is similar to this one, but on my test page I cannot insert a journal album set to the index page.
The journal album itself works: https://test.sven-michael.com/portfolio/portfolio/
But it doesn’t display on the front page: https://test.sven-michael.com
Any idea?

Better still…
It works but getting the albums in the correct order is not possible by using Custom in the way to order. Naming he slug within Lightroom however does the trick.
Look here for the result:

Eh… a smarter way to move the albums around is very welcome 
A known limitation, that we do mention in our documentation:
“Presently, journal sets cannot be embedded into pages.”
Try moving them from the Backlight Publisher
