Would it be possible to have a home page masthead that utilizes a pangolin-theater/vegas slideshow that hyperlinks to a gallery or specific gallery picture?

Albums cannot be deployed to the masthead.
You could, I suppose, hack something together using PHPlugins, or maybe move the slideshow into the masthead by messing with jQuery. However, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re confident in your ability to create a reasonably good user experience both in browsers, and on mobile devices.
