I purchased BL 5 just now and the modules are showing as available updates in my BL 3 installation. Clicking “Update All” shows the Update/Cancel dialogue, but clicking “Update” does nothing; no update occurs.
I might take a minute to download things. You should see the activity indicator in your browser spinning while Backlight works.
The activity indicator in the browser does spin for several seconds after selecting “Update” from the “Update/Cancel” pair; then something flashes very quickly on the screen (possibly a message?); and then I am returned to the list of modules with the “Update All” option. Nothing else happens.
I received a link to a zip file which I downloaded and unzipped. Should I be doing something with that file or its contents?
Yesterday I created a new gallery in BL 3, the first in a few years. When I went to add my photographs, I got the error message “Unable to find the GD PHP module. This module is required to upload images.” I had upgraded my PHP version earlier this year for some other software I am using which required a newer version. This, I suspect, may be the heart of my problem.
Not wanting to redo my entire website with a new installation of BL 5, here is a procedure based on the differences I see between my BL 3 installation and the BL 5 zip file contents:
- First, the differences: in the BL 5 zip file, the Galleries directory is empty; the Data directory is empty except for .htaccess and index.html, and the Modules directory is empty.
- Copy my current BL 3 installation to my desktop.
- Delete my BL 3 installation from public.html.
- Install a fresh BL 5 version.
- Copy back my BL 3 versions of the Galleries, Data, and Modules directories (except for the two files in the Data directory).
What could go wrong? What will I have to fix? Is there any hope of this procedure working with minimal problems?
Have you asked your host about enabling the missing module?
Thank you, Rod, for your suggestion. That worked so far as BL 3 is concerned. My new galley is now complete with its photos. But I still have my problem with not being able to update to BL 5. Any suggestions?
Since BL2, all updates are done from the Backlight Modules page. If that’s not working correctly, then @Ben will need to look at it. I suggest sending him Backlight Admin credentials.
You can send that to him via private message by clicking on his name, then click on Message.
He may also need FTP access.
Thanks again, Rod, for your help. I will follow through on your suggestion.
Yes, do as Rod suggests.
Upgrading from B3, you can effectively ignore the downloaded ZIP file for B5. The updater should handle everything for you.
If it’s not working as expected, then @Ben will need to troubleshoot. He’s on holiday at the moment, so may be delayed to reply, but he has been checking in. If you direct message him any credentials he might need to sign into things, that should help to speed things along.
Thanks, Matthew. I have already messaged @Ben as Rod suggested. Now that I know he is on holidays, I won’t hold my breath ( ); but I’ve held off on sending him credentials until he contacts me. Rod’s suggestion about the GD PHP module activation satisfies my immediate needs.
I didn’t upgrade from BL 3 to BL 4 at the time because I didn’t see a need on my part. I think I’ve ended up suffering what I saw a lot of in my IT career: companies not keeping their software up to date and suffering the consequences as system updates and other changes affect or even invalidate their software routines.
Yeah, but we’ve been careful not to screw things up in that regard. There should be no problem at all upgrading from B3 to B5, unless there’s some issue with your server contacting ours.
Can you message me Backlight admin credentials so I can try to see what the error message is?
The problem has been resolved with Ben’s help. That flash on the screen I mentioned in an earlier posting was probably the message “Your host does not provide support for the ZipArchive PHP package.” My host enabled the zip archive on my site this morning and the update to version 5 was successful.
It was a bit of a journey on Ben’s part and mine. Thanks, Ben.
