Viewing large images

I’ve been thru this sometime ago but recently it started bugging me again: the viewing size of the larger images. I used to use, in Photo Presentation/presentation type, Single-Image pages for the large picture display. But, because of the spacing between the text info and the image, it was necessary to scroll down in order to see the whole image. On all viewport sizes. Then, I changed to the Slideshow format and, of course, the large image fit on all viewports. Except that it’s smaller and there are all these controls and borders that show up.
What I would like, but can’t seem to get is something like the examples here:

Up to now, I haven’t found a way to do this.

both of those are the Single Image presentation.
what might be limiting the size of the images displayed is the page max-width set in the page template.

if the problem is the caption locations, that can probably be addressed with custom css.
