On several occasions, I have taken trips in which multiple destinations were included. Typically I have made a separate gallery for each destination and included them under an album set titled “travel photography”. This album set is designated to " descend up to one level". I would like to bundle these galleries into a specific album set named for the trip (e.g. “Rome and Sicily”). I assume I can make a new album set as a child to the parent “Travel Photography”. However, can/should I remove the original galleries from their listing under the “Travel Photography”? Also, to do so much I change the setting regarding “descent”?
Yes, you can put album sets inside of album sets. You’ll want to change the number of descendants in your top level set.
Once you create new sets, you should be able to move albums from “Travel Photography” into their respective sets.
How you move them depends on how you published them. In Lightroom, you should be able to drag and drop.
In Backlight, I believe you need to edit the album and in the Base Settings, assign it to a new parent.
Good to hear from you both; your help is greatly appreciated. My only question is whether the “Travel Photography” set is considered the top level or does that refer to the “Home Page”. If the latter, where do I define its descendants, since it doesn’t seem to appear on my menu designer page.
Thanks again and my best wishes for a happy holiday season.
It worked great! Only issue I had was when I chose “random” for the cover image on the album sets, no image appeared. I resolved the issue by selecting a specific image from one of the albums included in the set.
That’s one of the ways to handle the cover image. You can also upload custom thumbnails if needed.
See the docs for more:
Album sets don’t generate pictures or thumbnails, so there are no thumbnails to be chosen randomly.
There is a way to do that though, if you need it. Upload, via ftp, thumbnail images to the thumbnails/ folder in the album set.
Rod: Well I spoke too soon. I have a minor problem that I can’t seem to rectify. The first new album set I created was “Rome-Sicily”. After creating the new album set in LR, I then dragged and dropped the three albums into the album set and it worked perfectly. I was particularly pleased to note that when I hovered over “Travel Photography” on the gallery dropdown menu, I noticed that the three albums in album set were now gone and were only seen (as a second dropdown) when I hovered over the new arrow on the right side of the “Rome-Sicily” listing. Actually clicking on the Rome-Sicily album set opens a new window in which the three albums appear. This behavior is exactly how I wanted the menu to work.
Unfortunately, when I initially set-up the next two album sets [“Croatia 2018” and “Slovenia-Friuli”], I cannot get the above behavior to work…i.e. the individual albums still remain in the initial menu seen when hovering over “Travel Photography” and the new right arrow is not there. I was initially able to resolve the problem last night by changing the settings source for the last two album sets to either “Travel Photography” or “Rome-Sicily”, but this morning the issue has recurred.
What’s most confusing is that now while “Croatia 2018” album set appears when you actually click on Travel Photography and then displays the two albums in that album set, “Croatia 2018” no longer appears in the dropdown generated when you hover over “Travel Photography” in the menu! I must admit, I am confused.
I think I see the problem.
Your home page and your albums/album sets are using different page templates. These templates appear to be using different Menu Sets. If you look at an album, you’ll see the correct menu behavior. But not on the home page.
Check that all your page templates are using the same Menu Set.
OK, I will check the templates associated with each album set. That said, the first album set I created (Rome-Sicily) still works as desired, displaying the arrow to the right and then displaying the list of the associated albums in the set when I hover over it; the other two don’t. I never touched the settings for the template for the menu sets and am unsure how the last two would adopt a different template. I’ll let you know what I discover. Thanks
To be clear, check the Menu Sets assigned to all the page templates you’re using. Generally, you would want to be using the same Menu Set in all your page templates.
Rod: I don’t think the templates are the issue. I have attached an image with the template list for my site. All three album sets were created using “default album set” template. In addition, all eight galleries were created with “default album with cart”. Does this info help?
