Site upgrade

Just wondering about the best way to redesign this site, https://nathaliemoliavko-visotzky.com/, from OKAPI to PANGOLIN.
In fact, some pages are indeed PANGOLIN. But the core of the site is OKAPI. I’ve already paid up my upgrade but only used it for the theatre module.
I know I’ll have to redesign all the OKAPI pages but I’m trying to keep the site online as well…

Generally, start with a new page template, then create new album and album set templates using your new page template.

During the design process, I would create some temporary test pages and albums so you can see the effect of your changes without affecting the behavior of your current page. Albums and album sets can be hidden so visitors don’t see them.

Once done, you can assign your existing pages, galleries and gallery sets using the new templates.

I’m quite nervous about this. Have you tried using MAMP to build a site offline?
I plan on building in a sub-directory, something like https://pideja.ca/nat-testthe “new” site by copying and replacing the OKAPI template/pages with PANGOLIN template/pages with much of the actual settings of the site that is online. And when completed, replace the old pages with the new ones. Does that make any sense to you?

Daniel,
I think you answered my question when you replied, on September 20th: “Although I use MAMP from time to time, I found it much easier to develop my site on a real web host in a subdomain. This way, I don’t have to worry about the environment. Once the design is complete, I just copy the installation over the main site, change the site url and clear all the caches.
I guess that’s what I’m gonna try. Especially since I never was able to correctly use MAMP!

Pierre, I think you’re overthinking this.
I would do as Daniel suggested and just create a new page template first. Then create a page so you can start designing. This page is not really public since you won’t need a menu item to it: it’s simply a design platform.
Once you’re happy with page design, create an album template and a hidden test album to assign it to.
This way you can design on the same server the site i# on and you can do it in private. That’s much easier and a whole lot less complicated than using MAMP.

Once happy with design, simply assign your page, album and album set templates where needed.

Both of you are right, and I will try that approach.

Thank you

P.S. You will probably hear from me at some point…

:grinning:

Just one additional advice: try to design the site without using custom.css!

I was thinking about that.
Good idea.
I could implement only the CSS that is absolutely needed.

Here we go: what does “Float Page UI” in UI styling mean?

which template and what area of that template are you working in?

Sorry Rod, I was looking at the “old” Okapi version. But still, what did it mean and why is it not in the Pangolin version?

I don’t know what template/presentation you’re referring to.

I am designing a new Home page in Pangolin as suggested. But how can I “see” it ?

For design purposes? Just create a new page. Name it “test” or something. You can then view that page while designing.

I still don’t know what you were looking at that had “Float UI” as a control

I’m copying/adapting the settings on my previous Okapi home page to set the new Home page in Pangolin. Of course, a lot of the settings differ, but it’s a base on witch I can build the Pangolin page while essentially keep the almost identical design.
Only problem is I don’t know how to see it because there is no navigation link to it yet.

For design purposes? Just create a new page. Name it “test” or something. You can then view that page while designing.

And then assign that page to use your new Pangolin page template.

The UI Styling affects top pallet in Cart and CR

Pangolin has button alignment controls for the Top Pallet that probably do the same thing

Forgive me but I don’t understand: the site’s URL is https://nathaliemoliavko-visotzky.com/
I am designing another home page to replace the one online presently. To get to that new page, I tried https://nathaliemoliavko-visotzky.com/test but of course, this does not work. I get the error message “Something went wrong. Unexpected error: Undefined variable: album in 107-include-2.0.0-1-2-menu_20-admin.view-1.template on line 541
Please report error at https://discourse.theturninggate.net

did you create a new page and name it “test”?
