Upgrade from OKAPI to PANGOLIN

I can type in the settings, but nothing changes!

Stupid question maybe, but are you clicking “Save” after making changes?
Have you tried clearing template and browser cache?

Also, that aspect ratio is for the thumbnail container cell, not the thumbnails themselves.

First, I do SAVE and I refresh/clear the template and browser caches at all times.

Also, what I am looking for is to get the container to be vertical (portrait) to have the thumbnail images (most are roughly 4:3) fit the container.

I had no problem getting this in Okapi. I might have an archived version of this site as Okapi. I’ll try to check the settings.

If the images are not exactly the same 4:3 ratio, then the images (set to fit) can never completely fill the container.

You can turn off the borders and match background colors so it appears that they fill the space.
And don’t forget cell padding, that will reduce the size of the image inside the container.

I am aware that my image do not all have a strict 4:3 aspect ratio. But when in Okapi, I did not have all these problems trying to find the right combo of image aspect ratio vs thumbnail frame aspect ratio.
The padding is set to zero.
When in CLASSIC mode, if I turn off the forced coverage, I do get the whole vertical image within a much larger 4:3 horizontal frame. It is an option.
But I wish the space around the thumbnails would be reduced to look somewhat I have achieved up to now.

In the interest of time (I still have to format the mobile version) I am going to stick with the Album-sets and Albums as they are.

try setting the cell aspect ratio closer to what the image aspect ratio is. Something like x=2 y=3

No apparent change, in any aspect ratio.

As a sidebar, why does the look of the site differ when seen on Vivaldi, Edge, Firefox, or Safari? The character set on these browsers looks like it’s serif based like Times New Roman but I did install a Google Font that is non-serif that shows up great in Chrome and Brave browsers.

the thumbnail images shouldn’t change that much, just the space between them. Looks like you’re at a 4:3 aspect ratio for the cell?

no clue

I still am trying to change the thumbnails on the Album-set https://pideja.ca/gbc/galleries/

There is no Enforce Coveragesetting nor any other control on the size and format of these thumbnails. Oh yes, there is an aspect ratio set of settings but they seem to have no effect at all, whatever ratio is selected.

How to control the size and orientation of the thumbnail frames?

Your using the Iconic layout, which is best suited to custom thumbnails. It looks like the aspect ratio is set to nearly 2:1 and with Iconic, the thumbnail container uses “cover.”

If you want to preserve the aspect ratio of the album thumbnails, then use one of the other grid options: Classic, Masonry, or Descriptive.

Actually, I set the aspect ratio at 3:4. But whatever aspect ratio is chosen, in Iconic or Classic mode, thumbnails remain the same. I even fiddle around the thumbnail max-width from 100 to 500 to no avail.
I refreshed Backlight and the browser caches

are you clearing template and browser cache along the way?

I’ve tried Iconic, Classic, Masonry and descriptive. Changed the aspect ratio and max thumbnail sizes. I turn on light grey backgrounds in order to see the frame. All the while I do refresh the caches.
It’s seems pointless to go on because I can’t control either the size and aspect ratio of the frame or the size of the thumbnail image.
There must be some kind of setting I’m missing.

I just created a new Iconic album set with the aspect ratio set at 2:3 (for vertical thumbnails).
In the album set template I set the maximum thumbnail width to 250px. The albums inside the set use thumbnails that are larger than 250px in width and are vertical with a 2:3 aspect ratio. I’ve set the Gallery max-Width to 1140px

One setting that controls the display size in the album set is the number of Columns at Screen Breakpoint. The lower the number, the larger the thumbnail container will be. But it will need thumbnails that are large enough to display properly.

The other setting that controls size is maximum gallery width. On one of my monitors, your album set shows four columns of thumbnails, each display at about 383 px wide. On my larger monitor, there are six columns, each about 308 px wide.
You can better control the size of the thumbnails by limiting the width of the gallery to something like 1200px wide.

Well, well, well, much nicer, Rod! The images still truncated somewhat, but the thumbnails are vertical and I think you’ve latched on to something here.

there are a few moving parts other than the actual thumbnail settings. It can get a little confusing until you wrap your head around it all.

After some fiddling around with the settings, based on your suggestions, I settled on CLASSIC
aspect ratio 2:3
max thumbnail 250
max gallery 1640
6 collums at 1920 descending to 2 at mobile size

Honestly, I regret the more “abstract” look I had previously but the present look is more conventional and will be understood by more people.

So, I’ll put this thing to rest for now.

Thanks for all the help Rod
